Meet our Managing Director, Richard Standing

In our first blog of our new ‘Meet the team’ series, we sat down with our Managing Director, Richard and found out everything there is to know about Flow Group, his day-to-day role and some of his favourite things.

What is your role at Flow Group?

As Managing Director, my role is incredibly diverse, ranging from setting company strategy to ensuring the general upkeep of our facilities. No two days are the same, but that’s why I enjoy the job so much, I love the variety it brings!

Who are Flow Group?

Flow are fulfilment, print and third-party logistics specialists, but more importantly we’re a team! We've been around a while now, so we know what makes each other tick, and how to approach new challenges best. We love a challenge and always strive to help our customers in the most efficient and cost-effective way. We love delivering great results and developing partnerships with our customers.

How long have you worked at Flow Group?

It’s been almost 17 years now; we started the business in June 2008 and during that time we have been building a team of skilled print and fulfilment specialists. We are always looking at ways to improve the service offering we provide.

What does a day in the life look like?

My day starts with a carefully detailed list of tasks and responsibilities that (on entering the building) are sometimes ignored until 4.30 pm, when I take a breath! It can be hectic, but I love it and am really proud of all the team here.

What does Flow Group mean to you?

When I think of Flow, I think of the people in it, because they matter to me. I feel incredibly grateful to have met, worked and enjoyed so much of my working life with a wonderful group of people. They’re what make us Flow.

‍What is Flow Group's secret to being so successful?

Despite having the capacity to automate anything, we don't. We use software to streamline processes and improve quality. This leaves our team exactly where they should be, doing a brilliant job speaking to and helping customers deliver their often complex, high-value, direct marketing campaigns.

Why do your customers choose to work with you?

In a world that strives for automation, Flow's experienced team is available, helpful, and accountable throughout our end-to-end services. So, it’s the people who make our customers choose to work with us, as well as the end product.

If you could pass on your most valuable piece of business advice, what would it be?

You owe it to yourself to enjoy your time. So be willing to learn new things, enjoy what you do with people that you like. Life is too short to do anything less!

What does the future hold for the industry and Flow Group?

Our industry has suffered notable change, and more challenges will follow. Still, fundamentally, there will be a place for competent and flexible businesses that can move quickly and adapt to the changing environment. I’m always keen to see how the industry changes and figure out ways for us to adapt, while keeping our excellent service standards.

What do you most enjoy about your job?

I'm always busy, but there's plenty of variety, and I like that it keeps me on my toes.

What makes Flow Group different?

It’s a tricky question to answer objectively. It’s fair to say that all businesses have a culture that is unique to them. Flow's culture is outstanding (but again, I’m biased) and that depends on our team of individuals who uphold the friendships, care, and trust that our day-to-day activities revolve around.

Why would a customer want to work with Flow Group?

Our team has a remarkably low turnover rate and the same is true for customers. We tend to work with people long-term, becoming a trusted partner and extension of their business.

We offer a good service and from the start we work to improve the service and platform each client needs to achieve their individual goals. That goes a long way.

What kind of customers do you work with?

We work with a broad sector of industries so it’s hard to say. Any business that needs to communicate (or grow its offering) through direct marketing or eCommerce is in the mix.

What's the best thing about working at Flow Group?

I love to see the personal development of the team. For example, young adults arrive through apprenticeships, many of whom are still with us. Seeing them meet their partners, marry, buy homes, and grow their families is a wonderful privilege.

What was your favourite project to work on and why?

I've worked on many projects over the years, but purchasing Modern Bookbinders was extremely challenging due to the associated timeline and volume of work to undertake. Still, it was highly rewarding working with the existing team and overseeing their relocation and integration into Flow. This all happened alongside the goodwill generated by an old, traditional business making fantastic products. I'm very proud of this one.

What have you learnt by working at Flow Group?

I think it was Richard Branson who said: "Say yes, figure out how later." I live by this rule.

What's your proudest career and personal achievement to date?

To move from a well-paid job in Dubai back to the UK and start a new business in Huddersfield in the depths of the 2008 recession was, without doubt, the most challenging period of my life.

Naturally, overcoming those challenges and seeing the team drive Flow Group towards the business it is today, makes me incredibly proud.

If you could only eat one meal for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Christmas dinner. It’s ridiculous that it’s only acceptable one day a year!
